TO SUPPORT COLLECTORS
AND VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES IN ADDIS ABABA

BACKGROUND
ADDIS ABABA
MANAGEMENT OF
MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE
AND PLASTICS
IS CRITICAL

The management of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in Ethiopia is critical. The use of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is increasing: the consumption of PET water containers went from 1.2 ML in 2001 to 21.0 ML in 2010; the conversion from glass to PET of the main soft drinks is underway. Deficiencies in the MSW collection system cause abandoned plastics to disperse and accumulate near waterways, residential areas, roads and sewers, resulting in clogged canals, flooding during the rainy season, reducing the capacity of the soil to retain water and increasing soil sterility.

OBJECTIVES
IMPROVING HYGIENIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
IN WOREDA 02 AND 03
(ADDIS ABABA)

"RAFA - Requalification of river banks in Addis Ababa" was created to offer a sustainable response to the management of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) disposal by contributing to the local economy in Woreda 02 and 03 of Addis Ababa, two particularly polluted and fragile areas of the city.

In particular, the project aims to improve the environmental, living and health conditions of the communities living in the Kebena River area (Addis Ababa), through:

  • reducing pollution from plastic materials and spreading a culture of environmental sustainability in Ethiopia;
  • the improvement of the separate collection chain of plastic for recycling in Addis Ababa;
  • improving the living conditions of the community by exploiting the economic value of the plastic to be recycled.
HOW WE WORK
AWARENESS-RAISING,
TRAINING AND PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS
FOR WASTE AND PLASTIC MANAGEMENT

In order to improve the environmental and living conditions in the two target Woreda of Addis Ababa, RAFA proposes numerous activities dedicated to the identified beneficiaries. The virtuous model, already experimented with the "100% plastic" project, includes on the one hand the full involvement of the communities on the issue of environmental protection and, on the other hand, a strong structuring of a public-private partnership. The project enhances all the local resources, so as to create a strengthening of the public system of MSW and plastic collection and concrete economic opportunities for small, medium and large private subjects. This is done through training and awareness-raising courses offered to collectors and operators, residents and young people, with specific methods for each group involved.

RESULTS
BROAD INVOLVEMENT OF THE POPULATION ON PLASTIC AND WASTE MANAGEMENT AND COLLECTION IN ADDIS ABABA

Thanks to the implementation of a virtuous project model (the one created with "100% plastic" already completed in Awassa - Ethiopia), RAFA boasts a consolidated approach in the activation and management of a sustainable plastic recycling chain in Addis Ababa, capable of involving the whole community in waste management. To date, the project has reached more than 5,000 people, specifically:

  • 440 households have been interviewed on risks, attitudes, norms, skills and self-regulation regarding waste separation, littering (deliberate abandonment of waste) and outdoor defecation;
  • 4,764 students were reached through awareness-raising activities, including seminars, workshops and classroom laboratories;
  • 22 community health workers were trained in the RANAS methodology to raise community awareness.
