Today in Cambodia many children are not entitled to a happy childhood: over 18% of minors are involved in exploitation activities and 79% of them do not have access to education.

Phoum Thmey, a district of the city of Sihanoukville, shows real criticalities: the recent development of tourism and the expansion of the commercial port have led to the relocation of thousands of poor families in degraded suburbs.

The Phoum Thmey community lives in extreme poverty and children are not protected, lacking the bare minimum essential living conditions, such as adequate access to health care and education.

IN CAMBODIA

“Via del Campo”, launched in 2010, guarantees the rights of children with disadvantaged backgrounds in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. The project aims to keep them away from the street life and protect them from harmful and dangerous situations. Specifically, we want to:

be a point of reference for the entire community by offering assistance, orientation and support;
offer children health care that can ensure them adequate health;
ensure them a daily food support;
encourage schooling of children;
create a context of respect, collaboration, play, education and affection.

HOW WE WORK

A SAFE PLACE
TO EAT, PLAY,
STUDY

With our project, for over ten years we have carried out many activities in the suburbs of Phoum Thmey, in Sihanoukville, with the aim of saving children from living conditions that harm human rights and that prevent them from building a decent life.

We have created a day care center; a safe place that welcomes, each year, 90 children in need;
we guarantee access to primary school, offering a learning support program, with English lessons and recreational activities;
we are committed to guarantee one meal a day and access to health care;
we raise awareness among families on good hygiene and health practices and the importance of education to escape the spiral of poverty.

RESULTS

A REFERENCE POINT
FOR THE SIHANOUKVILLE COMMUNITY

To date, with Via del Campo we have created a welcoming, familiar and safe space for many Cambodian children living in conditions of poverty and at risk of exploitation.

Our center has become an important point of reference for the community living in the neighborhood of Phoum Thmey, in Sihanoukville. In its ten years of operation, the center has hosted over a thousand Cambodian minors, removing them from the streets and protecting them from a risky and harmful context.

Thanks to the center of Via del Campo, the rights of the children of Phoum Thmey are respected and their education and health are guaranteed.

Since 2023, we have extended our activities to the children of Oh Vietnam, a village on stilts adjacent to Phum Thmey, which is in a difficult socio-economic situation.
