A project that counteracts hate speech in Italy by spreading a culture of non-discrimination, through educational programmes and workshops aimed at children and young people.
TO COUNTERACT THE SPREAD OF HATE SPEECH
In our country, hate speech is increasingly present in schools, at work, on the web and social networks, in politics. The spread of hate speech has a frightening impact on people's lives, especially on those who, because of their religion, sexual orientation, geographical origin or disability, are socially more vulnerable. However, hate speech also has a wider effect on society as a whole: the spread of language based on discrimination leads to a progressive deterioration of relations between people, who become more aggressive and less sensitive to respect for others.
#iorispetto was created to contrast hate speech in our society, starting with the youngest. The project aims to spread a culture of non-discrimination, raising awareness among students, teachers, intercultural mediators and human rights activists about the consequences of the proliferation of hate speech.
Through participatory educational methodologies, inclusive ways of relating in the school context and at city level are promoted.
We counteract the culture of hate speech with Global Citizenship education, through a participatory methodology where the voices of the children involved become the protagonists of the activities carried out. The classes taking part in the project work using teaching kits - with proposals for activation also outside school hours - and have the possibility of inviting intercultural mediators, non-discrimination and hate speech experts with whom to discuss issues related to interculturality and respect for differences.
The project, launched in 2018, targets students and teachers from all over Italy, promoting the participation of families, neighbourhoods, professionals and hate speech experts. During the 2018-2019 school year, 408 classes participated in #iorispetto and almost 10,000 students were involved in the proposed educational paths, working both inside and outside the school. In addition to the lessons and debates carried out in the classroom, numerous mobilisations and cultural events on non-discrimination issues were organised, actively involving institutions and citizens.
